A homeowner in Lee or Collier County can stand in a carefully maintained yard with clipped hedges, green turf, irrigation heads, mulched beds, and tropical ornamentals and wonder whether the property could ever be considered Florida-Friendly.
Another homeowner may assume that replacing the lawn with native wildflowers automatically makes a landscape Florida-Friendly.
Neither assumption is quite right.
A Florida-Friendly Yard Is Not a Particular Look
The Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ (FFL) program is a statewide, science-based landscaping program led by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS Extension) and supported in part by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

Its purpose is to help homeowners, HOAs, landscape professionals, developers, and public agencies create attractive landscapes that:
- Conserve water
- Protect water quality
- Reduce fertilizer and pesticide pollution
- Manage stormwater more responsibly
- Support wildlife
- Work with Florida’s climate and local growing conditions
- Require less intensive long-term maintenance
Florida law similarly defines Florida-friendly landscaping as quality landscaping that conserves water, protects the environment, adapts to local conditions, and tolerates drought.
The key point is that Florida-Friendly Landscaping is a management framework, not a particular visual style and not an all-native planting requirement.
And Yes, That Little ™ Is There for a Reason
If you have been wondering why Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ keeps showing up with a tiny trademark symbol attached to it, that is not horticultural punctuation.
The name Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ is a protected University of Florida brand. UF/IFAS states that the Florida-Friendly Landscaping brand is protected under trademark law and that its program content is protected by copyright. The university also places restrictions on how the program name can be used for classes, events, and official instruction.
In other words, “Florida-friendly” can certainly be used in ordinary conversation to describe a landscape that makes sense for Florida. But Florida-Friendly Landscaping™, with the capital letters and nine defined principles, refers to the specific UF/IFAS Extension program.
The trademark symbol is basically the program’s tiny legal name tag.
That distinction helps prevent a landscaper, nursery, HOA, or other organization from inventing its own definition and presenting it as the official UF/IFAS program. It protects the identity of a statewide educational framework that has specific principles, teaching materials, and program standards. UF/IFAS specifically asks that references to the nine principles point readers back to the official program.
For the rest of this article, when we use Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ or FFL, we mean that official program.
Why Florida Needed Its Own Landscaping Framework
Landscaping practices that seem ordinary elsewhere in the country do not always function well in Southwest Florida.
During the wet season, thunderstorms can deliver a large amount of rain in a short period. If soil is compacted, already saturated, or covered by pavement, that water cannot soak in quickly enough. It begins moving across the property toward streets, drains, swales, retention ponds, canals, or neighboring lots.
As it moves, it can carry whatever is on the landscape with it, including fertilizer granules, pesticides, loose soil, grass clippings, pet waste, and other debris.
During the dry season, the problem can reverse. Plants poorly matched to local conditions may require frequent irrigation to remain healthy. In neighborhoods where large areas of turfgrass and thirsty ornamentals are maintained year-round, irrigation demand can become substantial.
South Florida’s sandy soils add another layer to the problem. Water moves through them relatively quickly, and dissolved nutrients can move with it. A fertilizer application does not necessarily remain neatly in the root zone where it was placed.
Florida-Friendly Landscaping responds to these conditions by asking how a property can be designed and maintained to fit Florida’s hydrology, soils, climate, and ecology rather than forcing the landscape to behave like one from somewhere else.
The Nine Florida-Friendly Landscaping Principles
The program is organized around nine practices. Together, they address plant selection, irrigation, nutrients, pests, soil protection, wildlife, stormwater, and waterfront management.
1. Right Plant, Right Place
Match plants with the site’s sunlight, soil, moisture, salt exposure, mature size, and other conditions.
This is one of the most important ideas in the entire program because many landscape problems begin with a mismatch between the plant and the location.
A shrub that naturally grows 10 feet wide but is planted two feet from a sidewalk will require repeated pruning. A moisture-loving plant placed in a hot, sandy bed may require constant irrigation. A salt-sensitive plant near coastal exposure may struggle no matter how carefully it is maintained.
Choosing the right plant reduces the amount of intervention the landscape needs later.
2. Water Efficiently
Irrigate only when needed, group plants by water requirements, and avoid watering pavement or creating runoff.
In South Florida, irrigation systems can become so routine that watering happens according to the controller rather than the plants. Florida-Friendly Landscaping treats irrigation as a response to plant need.
Plant selection matters here too. A landscape made mostly of plants that tolerate local dry-season conditions can become less dependent on supplemental irrigation after establishment.
Efficient irrigation also protects water quality. Excess water can carry fertilizer and other materials away from the root zone or across the surface into streets and drains.
3. Fertilize Appropriately
Apply the correct fertilizer, in the correct amount, at the correct time, or avoid it when it is unnecessary.
Fertilizer contains nutrients plants need, but more is not automatically better.
In South Florida’s sandy soils, dissolved nutrients can move with water. Fertilizer applied before heavy rainfall, spread onto pavement, or used in amounts greater than plants can absorb has a greater chance of leaving the intended planting area.
Once those nutrients enter stormwater, canals, ponds, rivers, or estuaries, they become part of a water-quality problem rather than a plant-health solution.
4. Mulch
Use suitable mulch to retain moisture, moderate soil temperature, reduce weeds, and protect soil.
Mulch is particularly useful in planting beds where exposed sandy soil dries rapidly under South Florida sun.
A layer of suitable mulch can reduce evaporation, protect the soil surface from the direct impact of heavy rain, suppress some weed growth, and help stabilize conditions around roots.
Mulch is not simply decorative groundcover. It changes how water and heat interact with the soil.
5. Attract Wildlife
Provide food, water, shelter, and places for wildlife to raise their young.
This principle goes beyond adding flowers for butterflies.
Wildlife uses seeds, fruit, nectar, foliage, bark, branches, cavities, leaf litter, insects, and host plants. A landscape can look lush while providing relatively little usable habitat.
This is one area where native plants can contribute strongly to Florida-Friendly goals. Many Florida insects have specific relationships with native plants. Some caterpillars can feed only on a limited group of host plants, and those caterpillars in turn become food for birds and other wildlife.
The ecological value of a plant therefore includes more than whether it survives or produces attractive flowers.
6. Manage Yard Pests Responsibly
Monitor plants and use the least harmful effective treatment instead of automatically applying broad pesticides.
Seeing an insect on a plant does not automatically mean the landscape has a pest problem.
Some insects are harmless. Others are pollinators, predators, or part of the local food web. Even when a true pest is present, the cause may begin with plant stress created by poor site conditions.
Florida-Friendly pest management starts with observation and identification. When treatment is needed, the goal is to use an approach appropriate to the actual problem rather than applying broad pesticides by default.
7. Recycle Yard Waste
Compost or reuse leaves, grass clippings, and other organic material when practical.
Leaves and plant debris contain nutrients and organic matter that came from the landscape in the first place.
When suitable material is allowed to decompose in planting beds, reused as mulch, or composted, some of those materials remain in the local soil system instead of being removed as waste.
This can also reduce the amount of grass clippings and other debris that ends up in streets, storm drains, ponds, and canals.
8. Reduce Stormwater Runoff
Keep rainfall on the property where it can soak into the ground instead of carrying sediment, fertilizer, pesticides, and debris into waterways.
This principle is especially relevant in Southwest Florida.
A summer storm may produce runoff from roofs, driveways, sidewalks, lawns, and compacted beds within minutes. That runoff can enter a neighborhood drainage system quickly.
A common misunderstanding is that water entering a storm drain receives the same kind of treatment as household wastewater. In many communities, stormwater instead moves toward ponds, canals, creeks, rivers, or coastal waters with limited opportunity for treatment along the way.
Keeping more rain where it falls allows soil and vegetation to slow, absorb, and filter that water before it becomes runoff.
9. Protect the Waterfront
Maintain low-maintenance areas along shorelines and prevent fertilizer, grass clippings, and other pollutants from entering the water.
For homes along canals, lakes, ponds, rivers, and estuaries, the distance between landscape management and water quality can be only a few feet.
A fertilizer granule several yards from a canal has little landscape between it and the water if a heavy rain arrives. Grass clippings blown toward a shoreline can decompose in the water and release nutrients. Repeated chemical applications close to the water leave little opportunity for soil or plants to intercept them.
Waterfront landscaping therefore requires additional attention to how materials move across the property.
These are the program’s official nine Florida-Friendly Landscaping principles.
Does “Florida-Friendly” Mean “Florida Native”?
No. This is an important distinction.
A Florida-Friendly landscape can contain:
- Florida native plants
- Appropriate nonnative plants
- Turfgrass
- Mulched planting beds
- Trees, shrubs, groundcovers, and other landscape elements
UF/IFAS itself explains that Florida-Friendly landscapes may incorporate both native and nonnative plants.
The determining question is whether the landscape is designed and maintained according to the nine principles, not whether every plant is native.
A native plant can still be the wrong plant for a particular location.
A species that naturally grows in moist soils may perform poorly in a hot, dry strip beside a driveway. A native tree planted beneath power lines may create long-term maintenance problems. A plant adapted to inland conditions may struggle with salt exposure near the coast.
At the same time, a well-adapted, noninvasive nonnative plant is not automatically excluded from a Florida-Friendly landscape.
Florida-Friendly Landscaping and native landscaping therefore overlap, but they are not identical ideas.
Where Native Plants Fit Into the FFL Framework
Native plants frequently make Florida-Friendly landscaping easier because well-selected natives may already be suited to local rainfall patterns, soils, heat, seasonal drought, salt exposure, and other environmental conditions.
Their value can extend beyond practical adaptation.
Florida native plants have long-standing ecological relationships with native insects, birds, and other wildlife. A native shrub and a nonnative shrub may occupy roughly the same amount of physical space, but they may not provide the same food, host relationships, or seasonal resources.
That matters particularly under the Attract Wildlife principle.
Native plants can also help reduce irrigation and maintenance when they are properly matched to the site. Plants that naturally tolerate sandy soil and seasonal drought may require less supplemental watering after they are established than species that evolved under very different conditions.
But native status is not a substitute for thoughtful plant selection.
A native plant placed in unsuitable conditions is not automatically Florida-Friendly. The first principle still applies: Right Plant, Right Place.
What Florida-Friendly Landscaping Looks Like in Practice
A Florida-Friendly landscape is not necessarily an untamed or informal yard.
It can be highly polished and suitable for an HOA entrance, commercial property, waterfront home, or suburban neighborhood.
The difference is in how it functions:
- Plants are allowed enough room to reach their mature size.
- Irrigation is designed around actual plant needs.
- Turf is used intentionally rather than as the automatic default everywhere.
- Fertilizer and pesticide applications are minimized.
- Rainwater is retained and filtered where possible.
- Invasive plants are avoided.
- Wildlife habitat and waterfront protection are considered during design.
These choices can still produce a landscape with clearly defined beds, trimmed edges, open sightlines, turf areas, specimen trees, and formal planting patterns.
Florida-Friendly does not mean abandoning maintenance. It means reconsidering why maintenance is needed in the first place.
If a hedge has to be sheared every few weeks because it was planted in a space far smaller than its mature size, the design itself created the maintenance problem.
If turf remains green only through repeated irrigation and fertilizer applications, the site may be asking more of that turf than local conditions naturally support.
If runoff repeatedly carries mulch or soil toward a storm drain, the issue may be grading, water movement, or plant coverage rather than simply the intensity of the rain.
FFL encourages residents and landscape managers to look at those underlying causes.
Why These Principles Matter So Much in Southwest Florida
The nine principles apply statewide, but their effects are especially visible in Lee, Collier, and Charlotte counties because water connects residential landscapes so quickly with larger aquatic systems.
Many neighborhoods drain into retention ponds. Retention ponds connect to canals. Canals connect to rivers, estuaries, or coastal waters. Shallow groundwater can also move dissolved nutrients beneath the surface.
That means a material does not have to be dumped directly into the Caloosahatchee River, Estero Bay, Charlotte Harbor, or the Gulf to eventually become part of the same watershed.
The landscape is one step in that pathway.
This is why Florida-Friendly Landscaping combines ideas that might otherwise seem unrelated. Irrigation affects runoff. Plant selection affects irrigation. Fertilizer affects water quality. Mulch affects soil moisture. Wildlife depends on plant choices. Waterfront protection depends partly on what happens farther uphill.
The principles work as a system because the landscape itself functions as a system.
A Framework Rather Than a Formula
Florida-Friendly Landscaping does not prescribe one correct South Florida yard.
It does not require the removal of every nonnative plant.
It does not prohibit turfgrass.
It does not require a wild garden aesthetic.
And it does not assume that every Florida native plant will succeed everywhere in Florida.
Instead, it asks whether the landscape fits the conditions of the property and whether its design reduces unnecessary inputs and unintended environmental effects.
In short, Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ is a landscape-management framework, not a particular visual style or an all-native planting requirement.
Native landscaping can be one of the strongest ways to fulfill and sometimes extend many Florida-Friendly goals, especially those involving wildlife habitat, local adaptation, water conservation, and ecological function. But those benefits are greatest when native plants are chosen with the same logic that begins the entire FFL program: the right plant in the right place.
For South Florida residents, that may be the most useful way to understand the program. A yard does not have to look radically different to function differently.
In a region of sandy soils, intense rain, shallow groundwater, canals, ponds, and estuaries, the question is not simply whether a landscape looks attractive.
It is whether the landscape makes sense for where it is.
